Do you know your Employment Rights when it comes to planning your summer holiday?
  • According to the Employment Act 2006, all full time workers are entitled to 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 of 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. You need to give notice to your employer if you want to take a holiday, and that notice should be twice the length of the time you want to take off e.g. ask for permission at least two weeks before if you want to take a week off.
  • Your employer has the right to refuse permission to take that time off, and must similarly give you notice at least as long as the leave requested.
  • However, paid leave is your right, and a worker may assert that right without fear of suffering detriment. If you were dismissed as a result of such a dispute that would be classed as an unfair dismissal. So if the time you asked for isn’t convenient for your employer, keep those lines of communication open and figure out a time convenient to both of you.
  • Your rights do not include carrying over unused holiday to the next year, or being paid in lieu of unused holiday, 𝘀𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, unless your employment contract specifically gives you those benefits.
