Carers to get some respite

Carers are to get some respite thanks to the fundraising efforts of Simcocks Advocates.
The Douglas-based law practice adopted the Isle of Man branch of the Alzheimer’s Society last year (2009) and raised more than £5400 on their behalf
The charity provides the respite sitting service to give carers an important break for a few hours every week. The society funds the scheme and Isle of Man Crossroads Caring for Carers provides the sitters.
The IOM branch of the Alzheimer’s Society was formed in 1991 and now has more than 50 members. A carer’s support group meets at the OPMHS (Older Persons Mental Health Service) reception area at Ballakermeen Road on the first Wednesday of every month from 10am until noon.
Secretary of the society Margaret Pimblett said: “As the Isle of Man branch receives no Government funding we rely and appreciate the support we receive from local companies as it enables us to maintain the contract partnership with Crossroads Caring for Carers.”
Each year staff at Simcocks choose a different Isle of Man based charity to support and last year it raised money through a range of events including a sponsored abseil in Maughold, dress down days, staff lunches, raffles and a car boot sale.
Chief executive Phil Games said: “Everyone in the company has been involved in raising this money and it is a pleasure to help such a worthwhile group who give such vital support to people in their own homes.”
