Stepping out for charity

An Advocate from Laxey has, over a number of years, clocked up 144.1 miles running for charity. However, Chris Arrowsmith hasn’t managed this all in one go.

Chris, 40, completed his 11th Great North Run on Sunday when he completed what is the world’s biggest half marathon, staged between Newcastle and Southshields.

Chris ran on behalf of the National Autistic Society, the UK’s leading charity for people with autism and their families and carers.

Chris, who heads the Litigation Department of Simcocks Advocates in Douglas, managed to boost the charity’s coffers by more than £1,000.

Chris said “I was a little worried this year about the run, as I had three trips to a physiotherapy clinic in five days before the race itself.

“Luckily, however, everything felt fine at the start and continued to feel good until nine miles into the run, when my right knee decided it wasn’t going to cooperate with the rest of my body anymore, so I had to cover the last four miles a lot slower than the first 9. Although around 14,000 people finished ahead of me, my very unimpressive time of 2 hours and 5 minutes put me ahead of around 34,000 other runners.

“The organisation and atmosphere involved in the event is incredible and it was a real pleasure to raise some money on behalf of a charity which deals with a serious, lifelong and disabling condition.”

Director of fundraising for NAS, Trevor Anderton said “I am so grateful to all the runners who have chosen the NAS as their charity this year. The Great North Run is a wonderful event to be part of. We had around 130 people running for the NAS.”
