Greek Canadian Called to the Manx Bar
Manx resident Irini Newby has been admitted to the Manx Bar having completed articles with Simcocks. Irini's swearing in was a day of many firsts. She was sworn in by His Honour First Deemster Mike Kerruish - his first as First Deemster, in the presence of Second Deemster David Doyle - his first day as newly appointed second Deemster. In a departure with past practice the Ceremony was held in Court for the first time with Irini's family present - husband Michael, children Charlotte and Jessica and mother and father-in-law Enid and Donald Newby.
Born in Greece Irini's family moved to Canada in the mid seventies. She received a BA (Hons) from the University of Toronto in 1986 before moving to the UK and graduated with a MBA from the University of Birmingham (1989). She worked for a number of years as marketing manager for a large manufacturing company in Sheffield before returning to her original career choice, the law. Irini completed her legal education at the Manchester Metropolitan University where she obtained CPE (with a commendation) and LPC (with distinction).
Prior to moving to the Isle of Man Irini was with Addleshaw Booth & Co in Manchester where she completed there two years articles and subsequently qualified in the Commercial Department, specializing in commercial property, more particularly investment and retail acquisitions and property development. Her areas of practice at Simcocks includes commercial property, business and company acquisitions and disposals and employment. During the past year she has been involved in acting on many of the large property deals on the Isle of Man including acting for the purchaser in the acquisition of the Strand Shopping Centre and the acquisition of several large office developments.

First Deemster Mike Kerruish was senior partner with Simcocks for many years prior to him being appointed HM Attorney General.
Irini Newby is the third person called to the Manx Bar in the last year who are articled at Simcocks. In September 2002 Barry Smith (a South African attorney) and Amy Scott were called.
The firm as has six directors with an additional 19 fee earners and current has an additional three articled students.
