Simcocks has a wealth of experience on all matters relating to employment law and can also advise on the Employment Act 2006 which came into force in September 2007.
The Act increased rights to annual leave, improved the rights of part-time workers and introduced a code of practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures. There were new regulations dealing with maternity leave, paternity leave, adoption leave and the right to request flexible working.
Another key document that came into force in 2007 was the revised Disciplinary and Grievance Code.
Some of the key points of the Employment Act 2006 for employers are:
- Most workers have a right to four weeks leave a year
- Part time workers will be given enhanced rights including continuity of employment rights
- Parents who have had 26 weeks service have the right to request flexible working hours if they have a child under six-years-old, a disabled child under 18-years-old or a dependent spouse
- All employees are entitled to 26 weeks maternity leave. If an employee has worked for a company for 26 weeks she will be entitled to a further 26 weeks – giving a total entitlement of 52 weeks
- There is protection for whistleblowers who report any illegal activities by the employers
- Workers who are invited to attend a disciplinary or grievance hearing have a right to be accompanied by a specified companion.
